Well yesterday was certainly an interesting day! We’re filming a documentary at the moment for my course. The title is recycling on campus.

We went on a ‘fieldtrip’ (minibus and all) to sweeep, specialist weee processing plant. Yes, we laughed at the motto too! Its where all your electrical waste goes, monitors, fridges, freezers, radios, printers, phones, keyboards - everything. It all gets delivered to the plant and put on a conveyor belt to a big (german built!) machine that uses turbines to break everything apart. It uses a lot less energy to do it this way. Usually the process involves cutting. Everything is powered by renewable energy too so its all very eco friendly :)

It comes out the machine and the small (tiny) pieces are taken off the line. The rest goes to another machine that uses magnets to separate some of the material. This then creates three conveyor belts which go through a room where workers take off things like batteries etc which are then themselves recycled. All the rest of the material is scrap metal, plastic has already been sorted. Its facinating! (if a bit loud!)

We also saw what happens to old monitors - the glass inside them and some more cool machinery! I felt bad for asking some of the staff to work during their break but we did get some fantastic shots! Not to mention a great interview with the owner.

We had to wear hard hats though :S and high vis jackets! very fetching aren’t they!? (check me in my fashionable green coat!)

We initially did a tour round the two warehouses and then we were left to our own devices! Wondering around a big scary, very dusty factory alone! lol We did need the time though.

We’re all so set on what we want to see from a shot when it comes to collaborating its chaos! Especially in interviews! Everyones like “ooooh no I dont want to ask the questions” so I was like fuck it - we need to at least look professional so I asked the questions! I was quite impressed with myself!

WOW - your field trip sounds like it was pretty nifty. And I just love those yellow jackets you’re all wearing. *lol* At least everyone could see you so none of you would be run over. ^^

I know this is totally irrelevant to your blog, but if you don’t mind could you answer some camera questions?

1) What kind of camera do you own?
2) Would you chose Canon or Olympus?

And:

What’s the difference between cameras like these:

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1289

and something like these:

?

Thanks :)

@Christian

1. I have a canon EOS 350D.
2. I’d always choose Canon, or if there were none - nikon.

The main difference between those that I can see is that the latter two are SLR (single lens reflex) which means nothing really other than you can change the lens to suit your needs where as with the former your stuck with the lens they give you. It’ll still do all the functions of the SLR but only with the one lens - which restricts the types of photography you can do.

I hope that helps!?

Woah that fieldtrip must have added a lot of progress to your project! I sincerely hope that everything is doing fine for you and your group, heh  anyway that fieldtrip sounds awesome! I really wanted to see what happends behind-the-scene in these factories, just curiousity kicking in.

Looking drop dead gorgeous in that outfit  poor thing you have to stand under a blazing sun to get the photo done. It’s white all over the place!

And the heap of whatever behind you… that must be really something!

I never thought about what happened to waste like key boards and such. That is very interesting. You have a very stylish green coat on by the way, I must say.

Ah, that yellow vest.. I had to wear one for three weeks (I was working outside..). Stylish, indeed, though I think your green jacket is far more stylish :P

It’d be interesting to see how a plant like that works. I’ve only seen sewage treatment in action, and that was nasty :/
