I doubt many of you will have heard of Habari - I’ve been stalking it for quite sometime and eagerly awaiting some sort of code I could get my hands on! They’ve finally released a Developer Preview. I’m pretty excited about it!

I immediately set about installing on my local server. The installation was pretty quick because there isn’t that much to the program yet. Its heavily influenced by wordpress but this installation layout is something I think wordpress should consider adding to their install process, I’ve seen so many people put the database information in the wrong part of the wordpress config file. Even I’ve done it!

Thats the install done, next heres a few screenshots from the dash, post entry and the actual blog itself.

Now you know me, I’m not one to have something new and exciting in front of me and not do something to it! Imaging if I had Toronto Plastic Surgery! Best customer ever!

I’m not a huge fan of K2 so I didn’t do as much to my k2 theme as I did to my wordpress k2, which reminds me, I need to clean that up and make it available for download! If your have habari installed and want a girly pink theme then by all means - have it! download here! It it breaks your installation its not my fault!

I’ve heard of Habari before (perhaps in the past month or so). It looks neat, but there are so many blogging platforms to choose from nowadays. I only stick by Wordpress because the community is so big, that if there is a question, there would usually be a big probability of receiving help.

Worth changing from Wordpress though?? Oh.. just read your comment below. Hehe, is making themes/layouts easier? I hate Wordpress for this reason alone.

Habari looks pretty neat. Their database setup is pretty good too. I prefer Wordpress myself for the same reasons that Yingna mentioned. And also because of all those awesome plugins.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Habari did well though. It looks pretty promising so far!

Paddy - at the moment theres not much coding so it will be easier but I expect it to get harder tbh!

I dont find wordpress customising at all hard lol! I just work off my base templates that I’ve made.

Cool, pink!

Hey, I’m glad you tried Habari. We need more people to contribute designs. One of the great things about Habari, if you’re worried about how difficult it will be to work with it, is that it’s possible to switch the engine that Habari uses for theming. So if you’re familiar with Smarty, you can use that. And I expect that within a year there will be an engine that will support many WordPress themes right out of the box. Just drop them in and they’ll work. Same with Movable Type.

Personally, I find the Habari method of dealing with things easier to understand. Need the name of a user? Use $user->username. Need the url of the commenter, use $comment->url. Want all of the approved comments on a post? $post->comments->approved. Apart from these small changed, which I think are more flexible than WordPress, the HTML design is exactly the same: You can create the same great designs for WP or Habari. AND, the Habari folks won’t scoff at your wanting to get paid for your design work.

Anyway, thanks again for giving it a whirl. It’s important that we keep in mind what the users who are going to use Habari need so that it gets easier not “get harder”, so I’m glad I came across you here. If you want, stop by our mailing list and let us know what you think and how you think we can improve it for you. That’s what the project is all about. ;)
