Just a quick note.

If you see any of these:
a) this account is suspended
I’ve had this problem for ages my host says I’m sending out over 200 emails an hour, i’m not and quite frankly I’m pretty annoyed that they think I’m stupid enough that even if I was doing it, would I do it again even after I’ve had hours of downtime and had to pay to get it back up. (yes, I paid.)

b) you get a page cannot be displayed or other error message
do not fear! I am going through a massive overhaul!

So - for regular updates through any downtime be sure to check out my livejournal where I spend most of my time swearing my brains out at certain companies and being a drooling top gear fangirl.

Installing IE7 automatically overwrites IE6, this is great if your a user, bye bye ugly useless IE6, but for developers its a bit of a bitch! So why not install them both.

Firstly create a folder called IE7 - It doesn’t matter where you make it.
Then download IE7 save the .exe file in the ie7 folder you made.
Download IE7 standalone archive by Jon Galloway. The blurb says theres an easier version to install but you dont need a pretty GUI the bat file works just fine!
Unzip the folder into the IE7 file.
Run IE7 standalone setup.bat It will do the dirty for you, to run IE7 run ie7.bat.

This is invaluble and its the closest you’ll get without having to worry about virtual machines etc! (Microsoft will probably never provide a means to have both running)

Why would you want both though? well the main reason is that users still running 2000 (I’ve seen people still running 95 - thats 11years old!) cant upgrade to IE7 and there will always be some running IE6 as a choice (or ignorance).

I trudged to the station yesterday carrying 2 heavy bags, which surprisingly contained absolutely nothing! 3 tshirts, some makeup (I don’t own THAT much so no snide remarks about plaster) and a jumper in one and my laptop in the other, It must be my weak and feeble nature. I walked to the station, a 10 minute walk normally though it took me half an hour with the bags I’m glad I left 40 minutes before the train went else I wouldn’t have made it! An hour and a half to london then a further half an hour crammed under sweaty business mens armpits to get home. The price I pay for being short. The only thing that kept me going was the thought of my k800i, sitting in a little box waiting for me! Unfortunately it didn’t help with breathing!

When I got home I immediately put in the sim card and battery and charged it up for 2 hours. (remember when new phones needed overnight charging!) Once I’d turned it on however I realised I needed a different sim in the phone so I tried to get the back cover off, oh my god is it difficult, I tried unsuccessfully with all my strength to get it off as did my mum and dad. None of us could do it! So to open the back heres a tip for you - Wear marigolds! (rubber gloves) first time opened when I wore them!

The phone itself is pretty big, I’m comparing this to the samsung d500. It feels pretty chunky but at the same time very secure in your hands. The lens cover on the back was the only thing that made me feel a bit insecure because it feels somewhat flimsy, no the cover itself, but the sliding mechanism, I can imaging many people loosing the back cover of the phone, which could probably affect it in some way as the lens cover has some control over the phone. You can take photos without unlocking the phone too, which could be a potential battery waster.

But enough pessimism, time to get to grips with the beast!
k800i
There it is. I find it very easy to text with, I had quite small hands. My parents (who have normal sized hands) did find it a bit of a challenge to hit the right keys, as do I when I try to hit the two soft keys the back and cancel buttons I accidently hit the ‘connect’ button or the ‘actions’ button. Though I’d imaging thats something you’d get used to in time.

The general phone interface is very similar to any other ericssons you may have tried, with plenty of themes to try - you can also download more via the internet and even make your own - if your running windows of course!

One thing (other than the camera) thats vital to know is how well the phone syncs with your PC. I cant tell you for the PC but it does come with software that does everything the mac does without the software. When I plug in my phone iphoto opens and recognises the phone as a camera allowing me to download photos into Iphoto. Then If you go to the macintosh HD you can explore the phones other folders such as videos, music and photos. You can install programs by copying and pasting a .jar file into the video folder for example and when you run it on the phone you can install it to the applications or games folder.

Onto the camera I suppose! 3mp sony cybershot camera, I somehow feel inclined to turn all ‘photogeeky’ on you here as I’ve had experience with a wide range of digital cameras and I can tell you for a fact the quality of sony pictures, is by far not the best you can get. In my personal opinion Canon cameras give far greater clarity, but we’re talking mobile phones here, not dslr’s! For a phone the quality is certainly adequate and you could easily print off 6 by 4 photos without any immediately visible flaws in the image. (I wouldn’t recommend bigger than that)

I’m a bit of a ‘macro whore’ as my friend would say, which for those who dont know macro is taking close up pictures, I was pretty impressed with the macro and I managed to get some pretty decent macros using an old slr lens (which you could get cheaply off ebay) attached to the back of the phone. (I used a 49mm f2.5 with a hoya filter)

I’ve yet to test it with people in clubs say but I will do as soon as I get back to uni. The flash is also very good. One other feature is ‘best shot’ which takes 10 photos and you can choose which ones are the best and delete the rest, I found this invaluable trying to photograph my cat!

The shutter speed is also very good especially for a phone camera with only a few seconds lag, its less than my old canon A80.

And now, onto the photos!

A few weeks ago I received an email saying ‘Free Microsoft Software for CS students - really ‘ This got me thinking, CS students? that means Computer Science, I suddenly felt really geeky. Although I am considering getting the USB symbol tattooed on me! (if anyone ever tells you tattoos aren’t addictive - hit them). Then I got thinking about the free software - ‘goodie’ I said and signed up.

Two weeks later I received my user name and password in my inbox and set about downloading. I downloaded Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2, Project pro 2003, Visio pro 2003 and I ordered VisualStudio .NET so I could have it in a pretty box! I still dont know what Project pro and Visio pro are so I’ve just burnt them to a disk and put them in a draw. What I really wanted was a copy of XP pro and .NET so I could practise programming on my own.

I’d decided to install XP on my mac. At first I tried boot camp in which the installation wasn’t exactly successful! I installed bootcamp assistant but when It came to formatting the drive it wasn’t having any of it, apparently my harddrives corrupt. All I had to do was put in my OS X disk and run a disk check but did I really want to do that?
Installing bootcamp assistant

Windows ParallelsIn the end I decided that I didn’t want to have windows seperate from mac, so I went for parallels, sure it costs $80 but thats only ¨£40 and considering the windows was free (and legal) I dont mind. I’m still in my trial period. Its briliant! I can copy and paste from mac to windows and I can access my mac files on the windows PC, they even share the same internet connection and because its running as a virtual machine my windows installation gets the same virus protection as my mac does. It took me a while to work out how to get right click in the parallel windows (ctrl+shift+click) and it can be a bit slow sometimes but I’m upgrading my RAM as soon as I can. I have 1gig at the moment which means windows can only run on a max of just under 512mb ram which isn’t the best for windows.

I only installed windows to run visualstudio .NET and It took me a while but I’ve found the settings to make a c program compile! Its very temperamental though!

What I’m going to show you is a very unnatural site - you have been warned!!

Firefox 2.0Although the official release date of firefox 2.0 is Tuesday, I’ve found a sneaky link to the newest release.

If your running windoze you can download 2.0 here and for those of you with macs you can download here.

If I’m honest I personally havn’t noticed that much of a graphics change, although it certainly is prettier, it already was on the mac, but for windows users it’ll be a sigh of tinted gradient relief.

RSSWhen you go to a websites feed you now get a much prettier display. Shown in this lovely screenshot.

Theres also a little button that replaces the x on the right hand side of the tab bar which gives you a list of all the currently open tabs.

For more new features see the official documentation here.
